Project forms for Product Definition

Typically a product definition project looks like this:

Phase 0
You provide the aim or product!

Phase I
A two day scouting phase where the subject is investigated by mining in scientific and patent literature. Normally many possibilities come up here. This phase is concluded by discussing the findings with the client and selecting strategies to proceed.

Phase II
A three day phase where selected strategies are studied in more detail. This will result in several preliminary product designs. This phase is concluded by discussing the product designs and selecting the designs for a development project.

Phase III
Putting together of a product development project.

Prototypes

As a design strategy the preferred approach is to have a clear idea on how the product should match the design objectives via its constituting parts.  As soon as this is achieved prototypes are made. With prototypes in place, testings are done to see in how far the design objectives are met.

Iterations

After the first prototype testings with appropriate read-out systems (HPLC, microbiology, consumer satisfaction, clicks on facebook ads), the product design is modified to match the design objectives better. Also the design objectives can be modified due to the outcomes of the prototype testings. Typically several iterations of prototypes and testings are performed to reach the always ambitious targets.
